The Stedelijk is Amsterdam's museum of modern and contemporary art and design, in a striking building on Museumplein — half 1895 landmark, half gleaming white extension that locals nicknamed 'the bathtub'.
What to see
Inside is more than a century of art, from Picasso, Matisse and Mondrian to Warhol and today's names, plus one of the world's leading design collections.
The displays rotate often, so there's usually something new alongside the modern classics.
Good to know
Book online to skip the queue; Friday evenings are noticeably quieter. It's included in the Museumkaart and the I amsterdam City Card.
You'll find it between the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw on Museumplein.
Tips from locals
Look for its standout Malevich collection — the largest outside Russia.
The collection is strong in De Stijl, Pop Art and postwar American art, with Warhol, Mondrian and De Kooning.
It's usually far quieter than the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum right next door.
Don't overlook the design and applied-arts holdings alongside the paintings.
Allow a couple of hours, more if a big temporary show is on.
Did you know?
Locals nickname the white extension 'the bathtub' for its smooth, seamless shape.
The original Neo-Renaissance building opened in 1895; the bathtub extension was added in 2012.
Its collection runs to around 90,000 works of modern and contemporary art and design.
It holds about 24 paintings by Kazimir Malevich, the largest such collection outside Russia.
The museum's signature white interiors date back to director Willem Sandberg in 1938.
