Hello Amsterdam

About

How we select and review.

Hello Amsterdam is an independent city guide. Every page is written and edited in-house under one byline — Hello Amsterdam — and built on a mix of on-the-ground checks, official sources and public data. This page explains exactly how that works, so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.

Selection first

A place only gets a page when there is a reason to send you there: a distinctive kitchen, a specific atmosphere, a genuinely useful location.

Verified details

Addresses, opening hours, prices bands and status are checked against official sources and public place data before publishing.

Maintained, not archived

Pages are revisited, corrected and dated. Closed venues are unpublished and redirected instead of left online.

Money is disclosed

Some booking links earn us a commission. That never buys a listing, a ranking or a kind word.

What Hello Amsterdam is

An independent guide to Amsterdam: neighbourhoods, restaurants, bars, hotels, museums, events, and the practical side of visiting or living here. We also cover the city's legal adult-entertainment scene in a separate, age-gated After dark section, because it is part of Amsterdam and leaving it out helps nobody.

How we select

  • Relevance. We start from what people actually need: where to eat in a given neighbourhood, what is worth queueing for, what to skip.
  • Distinctiveness. Interchangeable venues do not get a page just to pad a list.
  • Evidence. On-site observation where we have it, plus official websites, opening data and public reviews — never a single source.
  • Rankings. Our best-of lists state their basis on the page itself (rating volume, consistency, editorial judgement) so you can see how the order came about.

How we keep pages current

Venue status, opening hours and photos are refreshed against public place data on a rolling basis. Permanently closed places are unpublished and their URLs redirected. Prices are shown as bands rather than exact menu prices, because exact prices go stale within weeks. Each page carries an update date.

Independence and money

We make money from advertising and affiliate partnerships. Booking and ticket links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Partners cannot buy a listing, a position in a list, or a change to what we write; sponsored placements, when they exist, are labelled as such. See our affiliate disclosure.

Who writes this

Hello Amsterdam is produced by a small editorial team. We publish under one collective byline rather than invented author personas: the organisation stands behind every page, and corrections are handled centrally.

Corrections and contact

Found a wrong price, a closed venue or a detail we got wrong? Send it to us via the contact page and we will correct the page — that feedback is the fastest way this guide gets better.

In one line

Independent, checked against real sources, openly funded, and corrected whenever the city — or a reader — proves us wrong.
