The Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh's work in the world — hundreds of paintings, drawings and letters that trace his short, intense career. For many visitors it's the most personal museum in Amsterdam.

What to see

The permanent collection runs chronologically through the Rietveld building, from his dark early Dutch work like The Potato Eaters to the blazing colour of his years in the south — Sunflowers and The Bedroom among them — and on to his final paintings.

Letters in his own hand, shown alongside the work, make the story feel strikingly close. Budget two to three hours.

Good to know

Tickets are sold online only, with timed entry, and routinely sell out — book several weeks ahead. Note it is not covered by the Museumkaart or the I amsterdam City Card.

Friday evenings are usually quieter. It's on Museumplein, a few minutes from the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk.

What to expect

Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours for the permanent collection. The temporary exhibition (if you go) adds 45-60 minutes. Tickets sell out 2-4 weeks ahead in peak season; book at vangoghmuseum.nl. No walk-up tickets.

Audio guide €3 — recommended for the chronological context. Free for under-18s. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible. Lockers free; backpacks must be checked.

Tips from locals

Book the first slot (09:00) or after 16:00. Mid-day slots are consistently the most crowded.

Read at least one Van Gogh letter on a wall display before reaching the painting it describes. His own commentary changes how you see the work.

Skip the museum café for lunch — there's a Bagels & Beans 3 minutes' walk away, and Brasserie van Baerle is just slightly further with full meals.

Friday evenings the museum stays open until 21:00 in summer with live music in the entrance hall. Quieter than weekend mornings.
