Restaurant Bazar occupies a converted Dutch Reformed Church in the middle of Albert Cuypstraat — the same street as the Albert Cuyp Market and, on most days, just as alive. Inside, hand-painted Middle Eastern decorations cover the walls, enormous Moroccan-style lamps hang from the former church's ceiling, and a balcony wraps the upper level. The food is North African, Turkish, Lebanese and Middle Eastern — mezze, kebabs, falafel, harissa-laced grilled meats — at prices that have stayed reliably reasonable since the restaurant opened in De Pijp in 1997.

Why it works

Bazar is one of the best-value sit-down restaurants in central Amsterdam. Mezze plates are €5-8. Mains are €13-18. A full meal for two with drinks settles around €40-50. The atmosphere does a lot of the work: the room is large, theatrically lit, and noisy in a good way — easy for groups, easy with kids, easy when you just want to eat without dressing up.

The food is solid rather than refined. The Turkish breakfast plate (served all day weekends, until 14:00 weekdays) is genuinely good — eggs, feta, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, jam, bread. Mezze sampler plates work better than ordering individual items. The mixed grill is large enough to share. Drinks include Moroccan mint tea, Lebanese arak, and a basic but adequate beer-and-wine list.

When to come

Weekend brunch (9:00-12:00) is busy but turns quickly. Lunches are easy to walk into. Weekend dinners (18:00 onward) require a reservation or a 20-30 minute wait — the room fills fast on Friday and Saturday. Don't come if you want a quiet meal; the acoustics of a converted church plus 100+ diners is loud by design.

What's near

Bazar is steps from Albert Cuypmarkt — the city's largest outdoor market (Mon-Sat 09:00-17:00). Pair a morning at the market with a Bazar lunch, or work in reverse. The Heineken Experience is a 10-minute walk north; Sarphatipark is 5 minutes south.
