Steakhouse Piet de Leeuw
A classic Amsterdam eetcafé and steakhouse since 1949, on the Noorderstraat — legendary tenderloin steak in jus, in an authentic brown-café setting.

Just off the Rembrandtplein on the Noorderstraat, Piet de Leeuw is one of Amsterdam's oldest eetcafés, going since 1949. Its motto says it all — 'no steak changed since 1949' — and the dark-wood, brown-café interior, all brass beer taps, jenever jars and walls of guest photos, feels like a perfectly preserved slice of old Amsterdam.
It's a place of genuine Mokum (old-Amsterdam) character: unpretentious, warm and a little gruff in the best way, full of locals who've been coming for decades.
The food
The signature is the tenderloin steak (biefstuk) baked in butter and served in a rich jus, with bread to dip, fries and proper Dutch mayonnaise. There's also the more unusual horse steak (paardenbiefstuk), plus Dutch classics like fried sole, veal liver with bacon and onion, and carpaccio.
Good to know
It's central, a short walk from Rembrandtplein and the Heineken Experience, and reservations are recommended for dinner and weekends. Come for the steak and the atmosphere — it's about hospitality and character, not fine dining.
