Restaurant Greetje
Modern Dutch cooking in old Amsterdam near Waterlooplein — forgotten Dutch dishes reinvented with Dutch-soil ingredients, in a cosy monumental setting.

Tucked away on the Peperstraat in old Amsterdam, a short walk from Waterlooplein and the Rembrandt House, Greetje is one of the city's best places to taste Dutch cuisine done well. Opened in 2005 and set in a monumental 1889 building, it pairs a cosy, traditional interior with views toward the Montelbaanstoren.
Named after the owner's mother, the kitchen revives forgotten Dutch dishes and old family recipes, reworking them with a modern touch and ingredients sourced from Dutch soil.
The food
The signature opener is 'Greetje's Grote Begin', a generous selection of Dutch appetisers to share, and the much-loved grilled Frisian sugar bread with duck liver and apple syrup has stayed on the menu by popular demand. Mains lean into well-sourced Dutch meat and fish, and the tasting menus are a good way to try a sweep of dishes.
Good to know
It's dinner-focused and intimate, so booking ahead is recommended, especially for a canal-side table. It's a warm, unhurried spot — ideal if you want to dig into proper Dutch cooking rather than the tourist standards.
