Inside the luxury Hotel Okura in De Pijp, Yamazato is one of Amsterdam's most celebrated restaurants — a serene, wood-lined dining room overlooking a tranquil Japanese garden, where kimono-clad staff serve traditional kaiseki cuisine.

It made history in 2002 as the first traditional kaiseki restaurant outside Japan to be awarded a Michelin star, which it has held ever since. Under executive chef Masanori Tomikawa, the kitchen has kept to seasonal Japanese cooking at the highest level for over fifty years.

The food

Kaiseki is a multi-course journey of small, seasonal dishes — sashimi, sushi, tempura, grilled and steamed courses — each precisely prepared and beautifully plated, with ingredients often flown in from Japan. The seasonal kaiseki menus are the way to experience it, paired with a curated sake selection.

Good to know

This is fine dining: an occasion restaurant where booking ahead is essential, with a tatami room available for special occasions. Come for a calm, refined, immersive evening rather than a casual bite.
