Introduction
On 19–20 September 2026 the Dam tot Damloop, the Netherlands' largest running event, sends tens of thousands of runners 16.1 km from central Amsterdam through the IJ tunnel to Zaandam — celebrating its 40th edition.
The Dam tot Damloop is a Dutch running institution: a 10-mile (16.1 km) race from the heart of Amsterdam to Zaandam, run on the penultimate September weekend. With tens of thousands of participants, the atmosphere — especially through the IJ tunnel — is famous. The weekend also includes the evening Damloop by Night and a Mini run for children.
Why visit
Even as a spectator it's a great free day out, with big crowds and a festival feel along the route. Runners register in advance, and popular distances fill quickly.
