Introduction
On 27 April Amsterdam turns orange for King's Day, the Netherlands' biggest national celebration. The whole city becomes one open-air party of street markets, boat parties and music - and it's free.
King's Day celebrates the King's birthday and is the liveliest day of the Dutch year. Amsterdammers dress head to toe in orange, the canals fill with decorated boats, and the streets turn into a giant free market (vrijmarkt) where anyone can sell their second-hand treasures. Music stages and DJ sets pop up all over the city, and the party spills from the morning well into the night.
Why visit
There's no better way to feel the city's energy. It's free, open and infectious - just be ready for huge crowds and a sea of orange.
Practical information
Getting around
Expect the city centre to be packed and many roads closed. Public transport is limited and very busy, so plan to walk and avoid bringing a car or bike into the centre.
Best spots
The Jordaan, the canal ring and the markets around the centre are classic. For the free market, get there early; for boats, the canals are the place to be.
Good to know
Wear orange, carry some cash for the market and some water, and keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds. Many shops and museums keep limited hours.
Tickets
This event is free to visit. No ticket is required unless stated by the organiser.
