Houthavens — Amsterdam's newest neighbourhood, built on the water

Seven fresh islands where timber ports once stood: floating homes, the Pontsteiger landmark and Michelin-level dining on the quays.

The Houthavens — “timber harbours” — stored Scandinavian wood for a century before becoming Amsterdam's newest residential quarter, built as seven islands with canals in between. The architecture is the draw: the vast Pontsteiger building straddling the water like a gate, rows of floating homes, and quaysides designed for evening walks with the IJ shipping lane as backdrop. Serious food has arrived early — starred dining sits on the Danzigerkade — and the Spaarndammerbuurt's Amsterdam School masterpieces are directly behind the dike. This is the city mid-invention: cranes still turn, but the waterfront promenade already earns the detour.
