A bustling institution on the Spui since 1670, Café Hoppe is all dark wood, old gin barrels and a lively, standing-room buzz that spills out onto its covered terrace. It's one of the oldest bars in the city and a long-time favourite of locals — said to have been Freddy Heineken's regular.
This is the place for a classic kopstootje: a small beer with a jenever chaser, served the old-fashioned way. The atmosphere is genuinely historic, with a 17th-century interior and stained glass.
Right on the Spui square, it's also handy for the surrounding bookshops and the city centre.
