On the Zeedijk near Nieuwmarkt, In 't Aepjen occupies one of only two surviving wooden houses in Amsterdam, dating to around 1519. The name — 'in the monkeys' — comes from sailors who, legend has it, paid their tab with monkeys brought back from the East, which were then kept at the bar.

Today it's a small, atmospheric, candlelit stop full of seafaring character, with wooden decor and a good selection of beers and local snacks. It's one of the most historic spots in the old centre.

Cosy and compact, it's perfect for a single memorable drink while exploring the Zeedijk and Chinatown around it.
