Schiphol to Amsterdam
Almost everyone flies into Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), about 15 km south-west of the centre. One terminal, three halls, all transport leaves from Schiphol Plaza — a short walk from arrivals.

Train · 15 min · €6
Directly beneath Schiphol Plaza, up to 8/hour to Centraal. Best for most people.
Bus 397 · 30 min · €6.50
Stop B17. Best for Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein.
Taxi / Uber · €50–70
Official rank or app pickup. Uber/Bolt usually a bit cheaper.
By train
The station sits directly beneath Schiphol Plaza — follow the "Trains" signs. 15–17 minutes to Centraal, with stops at Zuid and Sloterdijk. Tap contactless in and out with the same card, or buy at a yellow NS machine.
- At night: 1 Intercity/hour, change at Bijlmer ArenA.
- Kids 4–11: ask for a Railrunner day ticket — €2.50.
Airport Express bus 397
Red bus from stop B17, every ~10 min from early morning to 00:30. Terminates Elandsgracht; does not serve Centraal during the day. At night the N97 Niteliner takes over. €6.50 single, €11.75 return. Card-only — no cash on board.
Taxi & ride-hailing
Official taxis wait outside Schiphol Plaza. Expect €50–70 to the centre. Uber and Bolt via app, head to the app pickup point.
Passes that save money
- Amsterdam Travel Ticket — Schiphol train (or bus 397) plus unlimited trams/buses/metro for 1–3 days (~€20/€27/€34). Expires at 04:00 the morning after the last day.
- I amsterdam City Card — includes city transport and entry to many museums; worth it if you'll pack in sights.
Quick tips on arrival
- Passport control can be busy — EU/EEA may use a national ID, others go full check.
- Cash isn't king; Geldmaat ATMs at Schiphol if you need euros.
- Late flight? Night train and N97 both run — just allow extra time.
