Day Trips from Amsterdam
Windmills, fishing villages, beaches and historic towns within an hour
The best day trips from Amsterdam in 2026 โ Zaanse Schans windmills, Volendam and Marken, Haarlem, Keukenhof and more, with exactly how to get to each.
Amsterdam makes a brilliant base for exploring the Netherlands, because so much of the country is absurdly close. Within an hour by train or bus you can reach windmills, fishing villages, beaches, and historic towns โ all easy to do independently and back in time for dinner. Here are the best day trips and exactly how to reach them.
Zaanse Schans โ windmills
The most popular day trip, and rightly so: a riverside hamlet of working windmills, green wooden houses, and craft demonstrations (clog-making, cheese, the works). Take a train from Amsterdam Centraal to ZaandijkโZaanse Schans (about 18 minutes, every 15 minutes) followed by a short walk over the bridge, or the EBS R-NET bus 391 from Centraal, which runs every 15 minutes and drops you right at the entrance in around 40 minutes. Wandering the village is free; the windmills and museums charge entry. Go early to beat the tour-bus crowds.
Volendam & Marken โ fishing villages
These two old fishing villages on the IJsselmeer make a classic pairing. Volendam, with its busy harbour, eel stalls, and traditional costumes, is reached by bus 316 from the IJ-side bus station behind Amsterdam Centraal (around 30โ45 minutes). Marken, a former island of green timber houses, is bus 315. In the warmer months a ferry โ the Marken Express โ links the two across the water, letting you make a loop rather than backtracking through Amsterdam.
Haarlem โ a calmer mini-Amsterdam
Just 15โ20 minutes by frequent train from Centraal, Haarlem is a compact, elegant city that feels like Amsterdam with the volume turned down. The Grote Markt square, the towering St Bavo church, and the excellent Frans Hals Museum anchor a lovely afternoon, and it's also the gateway to the Zandvoort beach a short hop further on.
Keukenhof โ tulips (spring only)
In spring, the Keukenhof flower gardens are the day trip. They're open from 19 March to 10 May in 2026, with peak bloom in mid-to-late April. Dedicated shuttle buses run from Schiphol and combined tickets are sold from Amsterdam; see our guide to the best time to visit for the full tulip-season picture.
Quick hits further afield
Utrecht โ about 30 minutes by train; a smaller canal city with split-level wharves and the soaring Dom Tower.
Zandvoort โ around 30 minutes by train; the nearest North Sea beach, busy on hot days.
Alkmaar โ north of the city; famous for its traditional cheese market on Friday mornings in season.
Getting there: tickets
For most of these, you simply tap a contactless card (OVpay) or buy a ticket at the station โ NS trains don't need reservations, you just tap in and out. If you're doing several regional trips, the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket gives 1โ3 days of unlimited bus, tram, metro, and train across Amsterdam and the surrounding area (Volendam, Marken, Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Zandvoort, Keukenhof and more), and is excellent value at roughly โฌ23โ44 depending on duration.
