A First-Timer's Guide to Amsterdam Nightlife
How the city goes out — areas, types of venue and how to do it right
A first-timer's guide to Amsterdam nightlife — the key going-out areas, what kind of night each offers, and how to do it like a local.
Amsterdam's nightlife is famously varied and refreshingly unpretentious — from candlelit centuries-old pubs to world-class techno clubs that run till dawn. Here's how it all fits together for your first night out.
Know the areas
Leidseplein is the buzzy, mainstream square — big clubs, live music (Paradiso, Melkweg) and tourist-friendly bars. Rembrandtplein is its flashier cousin, full of large clubs and party bars. Reguliersdwarsstraat, just off it, is the LGBTQ+ heart. The Jordaan is the place for cosy brown cafés, and Amsterdam Noord (a free ferry away) is where the creative, underground scene lives.
Pick your kind of night
Start traditional with a beer and a jenever in a brown café; catch a gig at Paradiso or Melkweg; go deep at a techno club like Shelter or Radion; sip cocktails at a hidden speakeasy; or keep it mellow with natural wine or a canal-side terrace. Most people mix a few.
How it works
Many clubs open late and close very late — some hold near-24-hour licences — and door policies tend to be music-first rather than flashy, so come relaxed and respectful. Buy club tickets in advance for weekends and big names, and brace for queues. October's Amsterdam Dance Event turns the whole city into a festival; WorldPride lights it up in summer 2026.
Getting home
Trams and metros stop around midnight, after which night buses take over (a small surcharge applies). Many locals simply cycle home. Plan your route back before you head out, especially from Noord or the southeast.
