Amsterdam Weather & What to Pack

What to expect season by season

Mild, damp and windy with sudden showers — Amsterdam rewards layers and a good rain jacket. Here's the season-by-season version.

Amsterdam has a mild maritime climate: cool winters, gentle summers and rain spread evenly across the year rather than in a single wet season. It's rarely extreme, but it's changeable and often windy — so layers and a waterproof beat an umbrella, which the wind tends to destroy.

Spring (March–May)

Variable, and the driest stretch of the year, warming from around 8°C to the high teens. This is tulip season, with Keukenhof open and the city in bloom. Pack layers, a light waterproof and a warmer jacket for cold snaps.

Summer (June–August)

The warmest and busiest months, with highs around 20–23°C, very long days (sunset near 22:00 in June) and the odd heat spell above 30°C. Showers still happen — July and August are statistically the wettest months. Bring light clothes, a rain jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Autumn (September–November)

Early September can stay pleasant, then it turns cooler, wetter and windier, with temperatures sliding from the high teens into single digits. A proper waterproof coat and warm layers earn their place.

Winter (December–February)

Cold but rarely freezing hard — typically 2–7°C — grey, damp and windy, with short days and little sun. Snow is occasional rather than reliable. Pack a warm waterproof coat, scarf, hat, gloves and warm layers.

Pack for any season

  • A waterproof jacket — far more useful than an umbrella in the wind.

  • Comfortable waterproof shoes for cobbles and sudden rain.

  • Layers you can add or shed as the day changes.

  • A small day bag you can wear in front in crowds.
