Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam City Centre
Train, bus, taxi or Uber — the fastest and cheapest ways into town
How to get from Schiphol Airport to central Amsterdam in 2026 — train, Airport Express bus, taxi and Uber compared, with prices, times, and which to choose.
Schiphol Airport sits about 18 kilometres south-west of central Amsterdam, and getting into the city is refreshingly simple — there's a train station directly beneath the terminal. For most arriving visitors the train is the fastest, cheapest, and least stressful option, but it's worth knowing all your choices so you can pick the right one for where you're staying and how much luggage you're hauling.
By train (best for most people)
Trains run by NS (Dutch Railways) leave from the station directly under Schiphol Plaza and reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 15–17 minutes, several times an hour from early morning until after midnight. A single second-class ticket costs roughly €6. You can tap a contactless card at the gates, buy a ticket from the yellow NS machines, or — easiest of all — book an e-ticket in advance so you can walk straight onto the train. At Centraal you're right in the city, with trams, the metro, and plenty of hotels within reach.
One catch: a Schiphol–Centraal train ticket only covers the train. If you then need a tram or metro to your hotel, you pay for that separately — or look at the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, which bundles the airport train with unlimited GVB transport for one to three days.
By Airport Express bus 397
If your hotel is near Leidseplein or the Museumplein in the south of the centre, the Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) can drop you closer than the train. It costs about €6.50, takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic, and runs frequently; the N97 night bus covers the same route after the trains stop.
By taxi
Official metered taxis wait at the rank outside Arrivals and cost roughly €40–55 to the centre, sometimes more in heavy traffic. They're the most comfortable option if you have heavy luggage or are travelling as a group, and they take you door to door. Make sure the meter is running or agree a fixed fare first.
By Uber or Bolt
Both Uber and Bolt operate from Schiphol and typically cost around €35–50 to the centre, though surge pricing can push that higher at busy times. Follow the in-app instructions to the designated pick-up zone.
Which should you choose?
Staying near Centraal, the canal ring, or the east? Take the train — fastest and cheapest.
Staying near Leidseplein or the museums? Consider the 397 bus, which gets you closer.
Lots of luggage, a group, or arriving late and tired? A taxi or Uber door-to-door is worth the extra.
Planning to use trams all day on arrival? Look at the Amsterdam Travel Ticket to bundle the train and city transport.
A couple of final tips: American Express isn't accepted on the trains or transport, so carry a Visa or Mastercard; and buying your train e-ticket before you land saves you fumbling at a machine the moment you step off a long flight.
