Getting around in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is small and walkable. When your legs give out, trams, metro, buses and ferries cover the rest — plus the world's most famous cycling culture.

Tram · metro · bus
€3.40 hour ticket, or OVpay per ride. Lines 2 and 5 are the classic visitor routes.
Free ferry to Noord
Behind Centraal. No ticket, no tap. Mini boat trip to NDSM, EYE and A'DAM.
Rental bike · €17.50/day
Fastest way to be a local — follow the rules and lock it properly.
Paying: just tap (OVpay)
Tap a contactless card or phone on the reader when you board and again when you get off. Works on trams, buses, metro, ferries and trains.
- Always tap in and out with the same card. Forget and you'll be charged a default fare (~€4 GVB, ~€20 train) — refundable within 60 days.
- Per ride: €1.16 boarding + €0.217/km (2026). Daily cap "GVB Max" ~€10.50.
- The old OV-chipkaart is being phased out — visitors don't need one.
Trams, metro & buses (GVB)
A 1-hour ticket costs €3.40 (all GVB lines, transfers included). Travelling lots? A multi-day pass gives unlimited GVB travel — 2026 prices:
| Pass | Price |
|---|---|
| 1 day (24h) | €10 |
| 2 days | €16 |
| 3 days | €21.50 |
| 4 days | €27.50 |
| 5 days | €34 |
| 7 days | €43 |
Note: GVB passes are not valid on the airport train or bus 397.
The free ferries to Noord
One of the best little secrets: the GVB ferries across the IJ are free — no ticket, no tap, just walk on. They leave from right behind Centraal, some 24/7. The way to reach NDSM, EYE and A'DAM.

Renting a bike
- Stick to the bike lanes (red asphalt) and ride on the right.
- Lights on after dark — white front, red rear. It's the law.
- Signal turns with your arm; don't stop suddenly.
- Watch for scooters sharing the lane; cross tram tracks at an angle.
- Lock it via frame and wheel to something fixed.

Walking & planning
The centre is often best on foot. For routes and live times: 9292.nl (locals swear by it) or Google Maps. Avoid the rush (07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30). And remember: drivers don't take cash.
On foot often wins
Most of the centre is within a 30-minute walk — and you'll see twice as much.
