Self-guided cycling routes

Five free routes to explore Amsterdam and just beyond by bike — from a relaxed canal loop to a half-day across the Waterland polders.

Before you ride, check the cycling rules.

Cycling routes from Amsterdam

Cycling routes in & around Amsterdam: city, polder and coast

No hills, a fine-grained network, and always a ferry or a terrace nearby. From Amsterdam you can drift down the Amstel in an hour, loop Waterland in a half day, or push on to the windmills of Zaanse Schans for a full one.

City spin or day trip: pick a route by distance

Our routes stick to marked bike paths as much as possible and lean on the free IJ ferries to Noord. Short city spins (<15 km) are fine on a rented city bike; for the longer polder loops an e-bike is friendlier.

What to pack and how to follow the route

Before you go: read the cycling rules, pack a windbreaker (weather turns fast outside the city) and follow a maps app — signposting helps, but one wrong turn is easy.

Good to know

Amsterdam's bike network is superbly signed, the land is flat, and the routes here stay on quiet bike paths.

  • 01

    City spins (< 15 km)

A canal loop or Vondelpark — about an hour, fine on a rented city bike.

  • 02

    Half day (15–30 km)

Amstel or Noord — pack in a lunch stop at a terrace on the way.

  • 03

    Day trip (30+ km)

Waterland or Zaanse Schans — an e-bike makes it much more fun.

  • 04

    By ferry

The IJ ferries are free and take bikes — the trick behind the Noord and Waterland routes.

Practical tips

  • Follow a maps app — signposting helps, but a wrong turn is easy.
  • Drink and snack along the way; cafés in the countryside are sparse between villages.
  • Outside the city the weather turns fast — bring a windbreaker.
  • Never leave a bike unlocked, even briefly.
