The Best Neighbourhoods in Amsterdam

A guide to the city's most distinctive areas

A guide to the best neighbourhoods in Amsterdam — from the canal-laced Jordaan to foodie De Pijp and edgy Amsterdam Noord. Where to wander and stay.

Amsterdam is really a collection of villages, each with its own character. Knowing the neighbourhoods is the key to enjoying — and choosing where to stay in — the city. Here are the ones worth your time.

Jordaan

The city's most charming quarter: narrow streets, hidden courtyards, indie galleries and cosy brown cafés. Postcard Amsterdam.

De Pijp

The buzzing, food-loving neighbourhood around the Albert Cuyp market — lively, diverse and full of restaurants and bars.

Grachtengordel (Canal Ring)

The UNESCO canal belt of grand merchant houses and the Nine Streets — central, beautiful, and quintessentially Amsterdam.

Oud-West

Relaxed and local, anchored by the Foodhallen and leafy streets near Vondelpark — great food, fewer crowds.

Museumkwartier

Home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Stedelijk around Museumplein — elegant, green and culture-rich.

Amsterdam Noord

Across the IJ by free ferry: former shipyards turned creative hub, with street food, art (this is where you'll find the A'DAM Lookout) and a different, edgier energy.

Oost

Multicultural and increasingly hip, with Oosterpark, Artis and a wave of good cafés and restaurants.

Centrum

The historic core — Dam Square, the Red Light District and Chinatown — busy and full of sights, if not the quietest base.

Stay in the Jordaan or De Pijp for charm and food, the Canal Ring for the classic view, or Noord and Oost for a more local feel — explore our neighbourhood guides for each.
