Amsterdam packs an astonishing amount into a small, walkable city. If it's your first visit, these ten experiences are the ones to build your trip around — a mix of world-class art, the UNESCO canals, lively markets, and the neighbourhoods where the city really lives.

1. See the Dutch masters at the Rijksmuseum

The Netherlands' grandest museum is home to Rembrandt's The Night Watch and a sweep of Golden Age masterpieces. Allow at least half a day.

2. Stand before the Van Gogh Museum's collection

The world's largest collection of Van Gogh's work traces his short, brilliant life. Book a timed ticket well ahead.

3. Visit the Anne Frank House

The canal house where Anne Frank hid and wrote her diary is deeply moving. Tickets sell out weeks in advance and are online-only.

4. Cruise — or walk — the canals

The 17th-century canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage site. See it by boat, or simply wander the Grachtengordel on foot at golden hour.

5. Get lost in the Jordaan

Amsterdam's most charming neighbourhood: narrow streets, independent cafés, galleries, and the Noordermarkt on market days.

6. Relax in Vondelpark

The city's beloved green lung is perfect for a picnic, a stroll, or people-watching alongside locals on a sunny day.

7. Browse a street market

From the buzzing Albert Cuyp in De Pijp to the floating Bloemenmarkt, the markets are where you taste and feel everyday Amsterdam.

8. Take in the view from the NEMO rooftop

The rooftop of the NEMO Science Museum is a free public terrace with one of the best panoramas over the old harbour and city.

9. Eat your way through De Pijp

The city's most food-loving neighbourhood, anchored by the Albert Cuyp market and a dense run of restaurants and bars.

10. Escape on a day trip

Windmills at the Zaanse Schans, the spring tulips of Keukenhof (mid-March to mid-May), or historic Haarlem are all under an hour away.

Do even half of these and you'll have seen the best of Amsterdam — and found your own favourite corners along the way.
