Noordermarkt

The Noordermarkt is one of Amsterdam's oldest market squares, set in the heart of the Jordaan beside the Noorderkerk church (built 1620–1623).

On Monday mornings it fills with a sprawling flea market of vintage clothing, antiques, fabrics and curiosities. On Saturdays it transforms into the Boerenmarkt — an organic farmers' market famous for cheese, bread, mushrooms and local produce.

Either day, it's a quintessentially Jordaan scene: locals chatting over coffee at the cafés that ring the square, a relaxed pace, and the Noorderkerk's brick silhouette as backdrop.

Behind the stalls lies a square with a place in Amsterdam’s social history. During the Depression, the Noordermarkt was a focal point of the Jordaan Riot, when protests against cuts to unemployment benefits erupted in the neighbourhood. That working-class past adds another layer to a visit: the Jordaan’s boutiques and sought-after canal houses belong to a district once shaped by artisans, labourers and cramped living conditions. It is worth looking beyond the market displays to take in that contrast.

Make the market part of a wander through the surrounding streets rather than a standalone stop. The Westerstraat and Lindengracht offer shops and places to eat, while the nearby Brouwersgracht brings you out beside canalside warehouses and bridges. For a familiar neighbourhood ritual, try the apple pie at Winkel 43 on the square, though its reputation can mean a queue. Leave time to browse the smaller side streets, where shop windows and narrow lanes reward an unhurried approach.
