Hello Amsterdam

Self-guided cycling route

Museums & Vondelpark

A short, easy six kilometres linking the three big museums to Amsterdam's best-known park. It works as a morning warm-up before a museum booking, or as a gentle loop with children — most of it is on wide, separated cycle paths.

The route, step by step

  1. Museumplein (0 km). Start on the grass lawn between the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk. Bike racks line the north edge near the Rijksmuseum passage.
  2. Through the Rijksmuseum passage (0.5 km). The tunnel under the Rijksmuseum is a public cycle route and one of the few places in the city where a busker's acoustics are genuinely good. Emerge at the Singelgracht.
  3. Along the Singelgracht to the Vondelpark (1.5 km). Turn west along Stadhouderskade, then enter the park at the Vondelbrug or the main Stadhouderskade gate.
  4. Vondelpark loop (2.5 km). Ride the outer path anticlockwise past the open-air theatre, the rose garden and the Vondelpark pavilion. Cycling is allowed on the main paths only; speed limit is walking pace when busy.
  5. Back via Oud-Zuid (1.5 km). Leave the park at the Amstelveenseweg end, ride east along Willemsparkweg or Van Baerlestraat, and return to Museumplein past the Concertgebouw.

Worth stopping for

The Moco Museum on the west side of Museumplein for street and modern art in a townhouse. The rose garden in the middle of the Vondelpark (roughly 70 varieties, best June to September). Coffee at the Blauwe Theehuis or the Vondelpark pavilion terrace. Book museum tickets for a fixed time slot before you set out — walk-up entry is rare in high season.

Practical notes

The park is genuinely busy on weekends and warm evenings: joggers, dogs, prams and children on wobbling first bikes. Use your bell early and ride slowly. Bike theft around Museumplein is common — use the fixed racks, lock the frame to something solid, and never leave a bike overnight. The Rijksmuseum passage is closed to cyclists only during rare events.

Extending the ride

From the west end of the Vondelpark it is 3 km to the Amsterdamse Bos, a large wooded park with cycle paths, a rowing course and a goat farm — an easy add-on of an hour or more.
