Amsterdam in 1 Day: The Perfect Itinerary

How to see the best of the city in a single day

A practical one-day Amsterdam itinerary — a great museum, the canals and Jordaan, a hidden courtyard, and dinner in De Pijp at golden hour.

June 10, 2026 7 min read

Only have a day? You can still see the best of Amsterdam — the city is small and walkable. The trick is one great museum, plenty of canal-side wandering, and a relaxed evening. Pre-book your museum and the Anne Frank House if you want it.

Morning — one great museum

Start on Museumplein with either the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum (pick one; both need timed tickets). Walk it off through the museum gardens afterwards.

Midday — canals & the Jordaan

Stroll north into the Canal Ring and the Jordaan, browse the Nine Streets, and grab lunch at a cosy café. Duck into the hidden Begijnhof courtyard on the way.

Afternoon — on the water

Take a canal cruise to see the city from its best angle, or keep wandering toward the Anne Frank House and the Westerkerk. Coffee and apple pie are mandatory.

Evening — De Pijp & golden hour

Head to De Pijp for dinner — it's the city's best eating neighbourhood — and catch the canals at golden hour on the way back. End with a drink in a brown café.

Practical tips

Use an OVpay contactless card for the trams, wear comfortable shoes, and watch out for bikes. See our other guides to plan tickets and transport.

It's a full day, but a doable one — and it'll leave you knowing exactly what to come back for.
