Amsterdam in 3 Days: The Perfect Itinerary

A first-timer's plan that balances the icons with the city's quieter side

A practical three-day Amsterdam itinerary โ€” the great museums, the canals and markets, the best neighbourhoods, and an easy day trip.

June 6, 2026 9 min read

Three days is enough to see Amsterdam's icons without rushing, and still leave room to wander. This itinerary balances the must-sees with the neighbourhoods and corners that make the city special. Book the big museums and the Anne Frank House well ahead.

Day 1 โ€” Museums & the old centre

Start at the Rijksmuseum, then the Van Gogh Museum next door on Museumplein (book timed tickets). In the afternoon, walk into the old centre via the Bloemenmarkt and Dam Square, and end with a canal cruise at golden hour.

Day 2 โ€” Canals, the Jordaan & markets

Begin at the Anne Frank House (pre-booked), then lose yourself in the Jordaan's lanes and the Noordermarkt. Spend the afternoon in De Pijp around the Albert Cuyp market, and have dinner there โ€” De Pijp is one of the city's best eating neighbourhoods.

Day 3 โ€” Neighbourhoods or a day trip

Either go local โ€” Vondelpark, Oud-West and the Foodhallen, or edgy Amsterdam Noord by free ferry โ€” or take a day trip: the windmills of the Zaanse Schans, or Keukenhof's tulips if you're visiting between mid-March and mid-May.

Practical tips

Get an OVpay-enabled contactless card for the trams, wear comfortable shoes, and watch out for bikes. The I amsterdam City Card can pay off if you're museum-hopping โ€” see our guides for the details.

With three days planned like this, you'll have seen the best of Amsterdam and tasted the rhythm of real city life โ€” and you'll know exactly where to return.
