Hello Amsterdam

Plan

4–5 days in Amsterdam

With four or five days you can see all the icons and live a little like a local — slower mornings, a day out of the city, and the quieter museums and markets that two-day visitors never reach. This is a five-day plan; if you only have four, drop the day trip or merge the last two days.

Book the big three

Van Gogh and Anne Frank fill up; Rijksmuseum needs a slot too. Full tips on First time in Amsterdam.

Leave a day for outside

The countryside, coast and historic towns sit within an hour. A break out of the city is the trip's pivot.

Save a slow day

Day five is for the museums, markets and parks visitors miss. Treat it like you live here.

Days 1–3 — The essentials

Follow the same rhythm as the Long weekend:

  • Day 1Rijksmuseum and the Golden Age, the Vondelpark, a canal cruise, the Nine Streets and an evening in the Jordaan.
  • Day 2Van Gogh Museum, the old centre, and De Pijp with the Albert Cuyp Market (slot Anne Frank House around its booked time).
  • Day 3 — the free ferry to Noord for NDSM, EYE Film Museum and the A'DAM Tower.

Day 4 — Out of the city

Take a day trip — countryside, coast and historic towns are all close. The windmills of Zaanse Schans are about 20 minutes by train, pretty Haarlem is even closer, Utrecht makes an easy city escape, and in spring the Keukenhof tulip gardens are unmissable. Pick one from Day trips.

Day 5 — A slow local day

Spend your last day on the Amsterdam most visitors miss. Catch a museum (or two) you skipped — the Moco, the Stedelijk, the Rembrandt House, H'ART, Het Scheepvaartmuseum or the glasshouses of the Hortus Botanicus. Wander a market you haven't done (Waterlooplein, the Bloemenmarkt) and a quieter park like the Oosterpark or Westerpark. Then linger over a long farewell dinner and one final walk along the lit canals. Browse Museums, Parks, Markets and Attractions to build your own.

Tips

Comfortable shoes for the cobbles, a layer and a waterproof in any season, and stay out of the red bike lanes. Over this many days a multi-day GVB pass alongside OVpay usually pays for itself.

In one line

Three days for the icons, one out of the city, and one to live like a local — that's how five days feels long.
