Good to know
Designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the building marks a turning point in Dutch architecture. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, Berlage gave prominence to brickwork, clear geometric forms and visible construction. Look at how the tower, arched windows and broad wall surfaces fit together: the effect is monumental without being ornate. Art was also part of the design, with contributions by artists including Jan Toorop linking the building’s commercial purpose to wider ideas about work and society.
A visit rewards looking beyond the main façade. Walk around the building towards Beursplein and Beursstraat to notice how its character changes from different sides, with substantial brick walls giving way to entrances and window details. If your chosen event includes access to the main hall, look up at the exposed roof structure. Afterwards, continue towards Dam Square for a busier city-centre route, or head towards the canals for a contrasting streetscape of narrow houses and bridges.
