The name Blauwbrug, or ‘Blue Bridge’, survives from an earlier wooden crossing that was painted blue. The present bridge no longer matches its name, but its elaborate decoration gives it a character of its own. Look for sculpted ship’s bows on the piers and crowns atop the ornamental lamps: details that connect the crossing to Amsterdam’s maritime identity. Rather than simply passing over it, pause to notice how much ornament has been worked into everyday city infrastructure.
The crossing links Amstelstraat on the Rembrandtplein side with Waterlooplein, making it a useful connection between different parts of the centre. From the bridge, the view opens along the Amstel towards the opera and city hall complex known as the Stopera. Combine your crossing with a riverside stroll, or continue towards the former Jewish quarter.
