The Dappermarkt is a long, narrow street market that runs the length of Dapperstraat in Amsterdam-Oost, beside the Oosterpark and the Tropenmuseum.
It's one of the most diverse markets in the Netherlands — over 250 stalls reflecting the neighbourhood's Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese, Ghanaian, Indonesian and Dutch communities. You'll find spices by the scoop, fresh fish, bread, Surinamese roti, Turkish baklava, fabrics, household goods and cheap clothing.
It was voted best market in the Netherlands several times in the 2000s, and remains the daily shopping spot for thousands of locals.

Tips from locals
Combine with the Tropenmuseum and a picnic in the Oosterpark.
Saturday is busiest and most lively — Friday is the local favourite.
Buy spices loose by weight; they're a fraction of supermarket prices.
Try a Surinamese broodje from one of the food stalls — a classic Oost lunch.
Did you know?
The market has been on this street since 1910 — over a century of continuous trading.
It was voted Best Market in the Netherlands in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Over 250 traders means it's one of the longest daily markets in the country.
The neighbourhood (Dapperbuurt) is named after Olfert Dapper, a 17th-century Dutch writer and ethnographer.
The Tropenmuseum next door grew out of the Dutch Colonial Institute, opened on this site in 1926.
