NDSM takes its name from the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, the shipbuilding company once based here. The scale of that work still shapes the place: vast sheds, open working yards and a waterfront built for industry rather than sightseeing. Look beyond the murals and you can read the former shipyard in the buildings themselves. Its reuse has kept much of that rough industrial character visible, rather than turning the site into a polished museum quarter.
A visit works best as an unhurried wander, with time to notice the contrast between monumental architecture and small creative interventions. The NDSM Loods contains an indoor community of artists and makers known as the Kunststad; remember that studios are workplaces, not automatically public galleries. For a more focused art stop, combine the wharf with STRAAT, the museum dedicated to street art and graffiti, then find somewhere by the water to watch activity on the IJ.
