The Schreierstoren was built as part of Amsterdam’s medieval city defences, rather than as a lookout for departing families. Its name is often linked to stories of women weeping as sailors left, but that familiar tale is not the accepted explanation: the name refers to the sharp angle in the former city wall. Knowing that changes how you see the building, from a romantic waterside monument to a surviving fragment of the fortified city.
Give yourself time to look at the tower’s sturdy brickwork and pointed roof from across the surrounding streets. The contrast with the busy streets nearby makes its defensive origins easier to imagine. From here, you can continue towards the Zeedijk for a walk through the old centre, or follow the waterfront towards the Oosterdok. Either route puts the tower in context: Amsterdam’s maritime past is closely woven into its streets, quays and former defensive boundaries.
