Museums in Amsterdam
For a city you can cross by bike in half an hour, Amsterdam holds an absurd concentration of world-class museums. The Museumplein alone puts three of the country's most important collections within a two-minute walk of each other, and that's before you count the canal-house museums, the photography spaces, and the quirky single-subject collections scattered across the city. Whatever pulls you in — Dutch Masters, modern art, social history, or something stranger — there's a building in Amsterdam dedicated to it.
The essentials
If you only have time for a few, start with the heavy hitters. The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, home to Rembrandt's Night Watch and an overwhelming sweep of Golden Age painting. A few hundred meters away, the Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere, arranged so you can watch his style evolve room by room. And across the city centre, the Anne Frank House preserves the actual hiding place behind the bookcase — less a museum than a place that stays with you long after you leave.
Beyond the big names
The obvious museums are obvious for a reason, but the city rewards the curious. EYE Filmmuseum sits across the IJ in a striking modern building devoted to cinema. Smaller collections — from the canal-house interiors to specialist museums on everything from bags to houseboats — fill in the gaps between the giants. Many are housed in historic buildings that are worth the visit on their own.
Practical tips
Book the popular museums online and in advance — the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and especially the Anne Frank House sell out, sometimes weeks ahead. Mornings right at opening and the last couple of hours before closing are the quietest. If you plan to visit several, the I amsterdam City Card or the Museumkaart can pay for themselves quickly. And don't try to do more than two big museums in a day — museum fatigue is real, and these collections deserve better than a tired march through the galleries.

Frequently asked
- How many museums does Amsterdam have?
- Amsterdam has around 75 museums, ranging from the world-famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum to tiny single-subject collections. It's one of the highest museum densities of any city in the world.
- Which museum should I visit first?
- If it's your first time, start with the Rijksmuseum for Dutch Golden Age art, or the Van Gogh Museum if you prefer a focused, manageable collection. The Anne Frank House is the most emotionally powerful but requires booking well ahead.
- Do I need to book museum tickets in advance?
- Yes, for the popular ones. The Anne Frank House releases timed tickets online and sells out weeks ahead. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum also strongly recommend booking a time slot online to skip the queue.
- Is the Museumkaart or I amsterdam City Card worth it?
- If you're visiting three or more museums, very likely yes. The Museumkaart covers most museums for a year; the I amsterdam City Card bundles museums with public transport and a canal cruise for shorter visits. Note the Anne Frank House is not included in either.
- What's the best museum for kids?
- NEMO Science Museum is built for children, with hands-on exhibits and a rooftop terrace. The Rijksmuseum also has a dedicated children's trail, and EYE Filmmuseum keeps younger visitors engaged.
- Which museums are best on a rainy day?
- Almost all of them — that's the beauty of a museum day in Amsterdam. The Museumplein cluster (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Moco, Stedelijk) lets you move between major museums with minimal time outside.
- How much do Amsterdam museums cost?
- Entry to the major museums typically runs €20–25 for adults, with discounts or free entry for children. Smaller museums are often cheaper. A museum pass can reduce the per-visit cost significantly if you're seeing several.
