De Nieuwe Kerk

De Nieuwe Kerk is a cultural museum in the old centre. A late-Gothic church on Dam square, now a venue for major exhibitions.

The name makes more sense alongside the Oude Kerk: De Nieuwe Kerk was built as the growing city needed another parish church. Its role later expanded beyond worship, and it remains closely linked to the Dutch monarchy through royal inaugurations and weddings. Look beyond the exhibition displays and the building itself tells part of that story, with soaring vaults, stained glass and an elaborate historic organ. The monumental tomb of naval commander Michiel de Ruyter is another reminder of its national significance.

A visit here is shaped by the exhibition rather than a fixed route through a permanent collection. Displays occupy a former sacred space, so the contrast between the subject on show and the surrounding architecture is part of the experience. Afterwards, use Dam Square as your starting point for a walk: the neighbouring Royal Palace offers another perspective on civic ceremony, while the shops and canals west of the square lead towards the quieter streets of the canal belt.
