On top of the Volkshotel on the Wibautstraat in Amsterdam Oost, Canvas is a rooftop bar and restaurant with a 360° view over the Amstel and the city centre. Set in a former newspaper building, it has a relaxed, creative, slightly graffiti-strewn character that sets it apart from slicker rooftops.
It runs from early morning to late at night — breakfast and lunch with a view, then drinks and bites, then, at the weekend, some of the city's best club nights.
What to expect
Expect affordable beers and cocktails, a large rooftop food menu, and a young, mixed crowd of locals, artists and musicians rather than only tourists. On Friday and Saturday nights a DJ plays late and the terrace turns into a party.
Good to know
The indoor restaurant takes reservations, but the outdoor terrace is first come, first served, so come early on sunny days and busy nights. It's in Oost, an easy tram ride or cycle from the centre.
