The Red Light District (De Wallen)

De Wallen, around the medieval Oude Kerk and the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal canals, is Amsterdam's oldest quarter and its best-known red-light area. It mixes centuries-old buildings with bars, sex shops, coffeeshops, theatres and the famous red-lit windows. It's also a residential and a working neighbourhood, so visiting well means visiting respectfully.

Is it legal?

Sex work has been legal and regulated in the Netherlands since 2000. The workers behind the windows are independent professionals running a licensed business, and the area is heavily policed and generally very safe.

The rules

• Never photograph or film the workers or their windows — it's against the rules, strictly enforced, and workers react strongly (phones do end up in the canal).

• Don't block the windows or stare if you're not a customer.

• No drinking alcohol in the street (around €95 fine).

• No smoking cannabis in public here, including the Wallen, Dam and Damrak (around €100 fine) — use a coffeeshop.

• Keep the noise down; people live here.

Guided tours

Tours are tightly restricted: they can't stop at or pass the active windows, and large groups are discouraged — part of the city's long-running effort to cut crowding and protect workers. A daytime self-guided wander is the easiest way to take in the history.

When to go

Daytime shows off the architecture and the calmer side; early evening, around 7–9pm, gives the classic neon atmosphere while crowds stay manageable. Later at night it gets busier and rowdier.

A changing district

The city has been reshaping the area for years — fewer windows, stricter rules — and continues to debate a purpose-built “erotic centre” outside the old centre to ease pressure on the neighbourhood. What you see today may look different in a few years.
