Homomonument is a monument in the Jordaan. The world's first monument to persecuted LGBTQ+ people, by the Westerkerk.
Good to know
Designed by artist Karin Daan, the Homomonument uses pink granite triangles to turn a symbol of persecution into a statement of remembrance and solidarity. The design refers to the pink triangle imposed on gay men in Nazi concentration camps, later reclaimed as a symbol of gay emancipation. Rather than placing remembrance on a pedestal, Daan embedded it in the city’s public space. The monument connects the memory of persecution with the continuing struggle for equality and the freedom to be yourself.
The monument reveals itself gradually as you walk across Westermarkt towards the Keizersgracht. Its triangular forms sit within the square and extend towards the water, making it a place to pause rather than a sight with a prescribed route. Look for the poetry inscription by Jacob Israël de Haan, and give space to anyone leaving flowers or reflecting quietly. You can combine a visit with the nearby Anne Frank House, then continue along the canal for a walk through the surrounding streets.
