Torensluis takes its name from the Jan Roodenpoortstoren, a tower that once stood here and has since been demolished. The bridge’s unusually spacious shape makes more sense when you picture that vanished structure above it. Another layer of Amsterdam’s history appears in the statue of Multatuli, the pen name of writer Eduard Douwes Dekker. His novel Max Havelaar challenged abuses under Dutch colonial rule, giving this everyday crossing a connection to the country’s literary and political history.
Rather than treating Torensluis as a destination with an interior to explore, make it a pause in a longer wander. Look along the Singel for views of canal houses and passing boats, then turn towards the nearby Jordaan for smaller streets and neighbourhood cafés. In the other direction, the lanes lead towards Dam Square.
