Van der Pekbuurt — Amsterdam Noord's oldest workers' quarter

Cross the IJ on the free Buiksloterweg ferry from Centraal and you land, within minutes, in one of Amsterdam's most quietly distinctive neighbourhoods. The Van der Pekbuurt was built between 1918 and 1925 as one of the country's first large-scale social housing projects, designed by architect Jan Ernst van der Pek for dockworkers and their families. Its low brick blocks, green courtyards and human-scale streets still set the tone today — you notice the silence first, then the light.

The spine of the neighbourhood is the Van der Pekstraat, a modest shopping street with a street market several days a week, a handful of Turkish and Moroccan bakeries, and a slowly expanding cluster of independent cafés and restaurants. It's less polished than the Jordaan and less staged than NDSM, and that's exactly the appeal. Locals talk to each other on the pavement. People still ring bicycle bells rather than shout.

Around the edges, change is faster: the Overhoeks and Buiksloterham development belts push new architecture right up against the old blocks. But inside the buurt itself, the rhythm is neighbourly and unhurried — a good place to eat well, walk without a plan and see a version of Noord that has nothing to do with the festival posters.
