Flying Dutchmen Cocktails

Near the Spui in the canal belt, Flying Dutchmen Cocktails is one of Amsterdam's most respected cocktail bars, set inside the Odeon — a Dutch national monument from 1662, with government-protected ceiling paintings overhead. It was founded by celebrated Dutch bartenders including Tess Posthumus, and it takes the craft seriously.

Its focus is (neo-)classic cocktails, backed by the largest backbar in the Netherlands — hundreds of unique spirits. The room is buzzy yet refined, with a long wood bar and shelves stacked high with rare bottles.

What to expect

Expect expertly made, perfectly balanced drinks — a flawless Martinez, a gin- or jenever-forward classic — served by bartenders who know their stuff. The crowd is a lively mix of locals, cocktail enthusiasts and well-dressed groups starting their night. It's open seven days, 5pm until 4am, the latest-closing cocktail bar in the city.

Good to know

It's a small, very popular space, so booking ahead is wise (a reservation fee usually goes towards your bill). If you only know one cocktail, ask the bartender to make you something to your taste — that's the best way in.
