Montelbaanstoren is a historic tower in Nieuwmarkt. A picturesque 16th-century defence tower on the Oudeschans.

The tower’s silhouette reflects different chapters of Amsterdam’s history. Its brick base belonged to the city’s defences, guarding the waterside when this was an important approach to the harbour. The ornate upper section was added later and is associated with architect Hendrick de Keyser. Looking up from the canal, you can see the contrast between the solid defensive structure below and the lighter, decorative crown: a useful clue to how the building’s role changed over time.
Treat the tower as a waterside pause rather than the centrepiece of an indoor itinerary. From the surrounding quays and bridges, the canal gives you room to appreciate its full outline and its relationship with the neighbouring houses.
