The Scheepvaarthuis was built as a shared headquarters for shipping companies, giving Amsterdam’s maritime trade a striking architectural address. Architect Johan van der Mey worked with Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer on a design that brought architecture, sculpture and decorative craftsmanship together. Rather than treating ornament as an extra layer, the building makes it part of the whole composition: brickwork, ironwork and carved details all contribute to its distinctive identity.
Today, the building houses Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam, so it is a working hotel rather than a conventional visitor attraction. From the pavement on Prins Hendrikkade, take time to study the façade instead of looking for a single main viewpoint; its character emerges through changing angles and small details. You can combine the stop with a walk along the nearby Oude Waal and Binnenkant, where canal-side houses offer a contrasting view of Amsterdam’s trading past.
