Roopram Roti is a no-frills Surinamese roti counter on Van Woustraat in De Pijp, a few minutes' walk from Albert Cuypmarkt. This is not a place you come for ambiance — the room is plain, the seating is hard, the service is fast and functional. You come for the roti, which many Amsterdammers will tell you is among the best Surinamese food in the city. There's almost always a queue at peak times, which tells you what you need to know.
What to order
The roti is the whole point: a soft flatbread served with curried chicken, lamb, or a vegetarian filling, plus potato, long beans (kousenband), and a boiled egg, with the curry sauce on the side or poured over. The chicken roti is the standard order. Add a bara (a savoury fried lentil-flour doughnut) on the side. Everything is generously portioned and very affordable.
Practical
Open daily, roughly 13:00–21:00 (hours can vary, especially Sundays — worth checking before a special trip). Mostly takeaway with limited seating, so it works well as a quick lunch or a meal to take to nearby Sarphatipark. Cash and cards accepted. Roopram has more than one Amsterdam location; this De Pijp branch on Van Woustraat is the most central for visitors.
