The Dapperbuurt lives around its market: six days a week the Dapperstraat fills with stalls selling Surinamese herbs, Turkish flatbread, fabric, fish and phone cases in cheerful disorder — a street market that serves residents first and visitors as welcome bystanders. The surrounding streets, rebuilt in waves through the twentieth century, hold snack bars and bakeries where a full lunch costs what a coffee does in the centre. The Tropenmuseum-era grandeur of the Oosterpark neighbourhood borders one side, Artis and the Plantage are a short walk west. Come on a Saturday morning, buy something you can't pronounce, and eat it in the Oosterpark.
