Oosterparkbuurt — Amsterdam Oost's green, layered heart

The Oosterparkbuurt is what people mean when they say Amsterdam is a city of neighbourhoods. Laid out at the end of the 19th century as one of the first big expansions beyond the canals, it grew up around the Oosterpark itself — a shaded English-style park that has always doubled as the buurt's living room. On a warm afternoon, you'll find every version of Amsterdam under the same trees.

Around the park, the streets are dense and low, with tall trees, wide sidewalks and a striking cultural mix that has shaped the buurt's kitchens as much as its cafés. Along the Linnaeusstraat and near the adjacent Dappermarkt — one of the city's oldest and most affordable street markets — you eat half the world within a few blocks of each other, from Surinamese to Greek. On the western edge, Wereldmuseum Amsterdam (the former Tropenmuseum) sits in a monumental building that anchors the whole neighbourhood.

It's the kind of buurt where you come for one thing — a coffee, a walk, a specific restaurant — and end up staying the afternoon. Less curated than De Pijp, less touristy than the Plantage, and more relaxed than either.
