Built on artificial islands along the IJ, Amsterdam Centraal reshaped the relationship between the city and its waterfront. Its position brought the railway straight to the edge of the historic centre, making the station a gateway for visitors arriving from across the Netherlands and beyond. Look closely at the façade and you will find decorative sculpture, coats of arms and maritime references: details that connect the building to Amsterdam’s identity as a trading city.
A visit is as much about the surroundings as the station itself. The city-facing side opens towards Damrak, where you can continue on foot towards Dam Square, while the waterfront side offers views across the IJ and access to ferries towards Amsterdam-Noord. For a quieter architectural detour, look for the Cuyperspassage, a pedestrian and cycle tunnel with a large blue-and-white tile artwork. Keep to the pedestrian section: this is a working route through a busy transport hub.
