Designed by Hendrick de Keyser, Noorderkerk was built for the growing population of the Jordaan. Its Greek-cross plan sets it apart from churches organised around a long central nave: the arms extend around a central space, bringing the congregation closer to the pulpit. Looking at the building with this in mind makes its compact shape easier to understand: this was architecture designed around listening together.
