The Posthoornkerk was designed by Pierre Cuypers, the architect also associated with the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Centraal. Built as a Roman Catholic church, it brings the Gothic Revival into a tightly packed urban setting rather than standing apart on a broad square. Look for the pointed arches, elaborate brickwork and towers rising above the surrounding houses. Its distinctive silhouette makes it worth pausing across the street to see how the building fits into the neighbourhood.

The building no longer functions as a parish church and now hosts events, so an interior visit depends on what is taking place. If public access is available, the contrast with the busy shopping street is part of the appeal: soaring vaults, columns and stained glass give the interior a very different scale. Combine a look at the church with browsing along Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk, then head towards Brouwersgracht for a canalside continuation of your walk.
