La Brutal is the answer to Amsterdam's oldest food complaint — that the city can't do real tacos. Run by Mexicans, approved loudly by Mexicans, it grills its meats juicy and correct, doubles its tortillas properly and keeps the format street-simple.
What to order
Al pastor is the benchmark order: charred at the edges, sweet from the pineapple, balanced with onion and coriander. Suadero is the quieter favourite, and the quesadillas are worth adding for the table. Portions are street-sized, so three to four tacos per person is a normal order rather than a greedy one.
The wait — and how to beat it
Everything is made to order, and at peak the wait stretches past half an hour, with tickets not always emerging in sequence. Arrive before 18:00 on a weekday, or come late; otherwise take the tacos to a market bench on the Albert Cuypstraat and treat the queue as part of the format.
Our verdict
For taste per euro this is one of the strongest casual meals in De Pijp. Come for the food, not the comfort: seating is limited, service is counter-style and Mondays are closed.

- Usually yes at peak times. Everything is made to order, so waits can stretch past half an hour on Friday and Saturday evenings and around Albert Cuyp market hours. Go early (before 18:00) or late for the shortest wait.

- No — it is a walk-in taqueria with counter service and limited seating. Many people take their tacos to a bench on the Albert Cuypstraat.

- Start with al pastor and suadero, add a quesadilla or two, and order more than you think you need: the tacos are street-sized, not plate-sized.
- Is the food halal or vegetarian-friendly?
- It is not a halal kitchen — pork (al pastor, carnitas) is central to the menu. There are vegetarian fillings, but vegans should check on the day.
