Winkel 43
The Jordaan corner café behind Amsterdam's most famous appeltaart — best after a wander round the Noordermarkt.

On the corner where the Westerstraat meets the Noordermarkt stands Winkel 43, a classic Amsterdam corner café in the heart of the Jordaan. It has been here since the late 1970s, and it is the appeltaart — Dutch apple pie — that made it famous.
This is the thick, cake-like Dutch version with a cookie-crumb crust, served warm with a mountain of whipped cream. They sell hundreds of slices a day, and it is reason enough to visit on its own. Beyond the pie, it is a proper all-day café: breakfast, a monthly-changing lunch and dinner menu, and drinks late into the evening.
Come on a Monday for the fabric market or a Saturday for the organic farmers' market on the square — the atmosphere is at its best, though the apple-pie queue is longest then too. The terrace is one of the sunniest in the Jordaan.
